The memorial was created to:

  1. Name those from beverly who were killed in action (full name, branch of service, and date of loss)
  2. History of site's significance
  3. History of the Vietnam war and those who were killed
“Ellis Square was dedicated in the 1921 named for WWI veteran Harry Ellis who was killed in action 1918. In 1981, Mayor Peter Fortunato belt a park within the square, naming it “Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza At One Ellies Square” and dedicated a Vietnam Memorial Plaque which served as the original Vietnam veteran memorial marker.”(1) In our history class, we have not discussed the Vietnam war period or studied it. But, It was during the war when Led Zeppelin’s song ‘Whole Lotta Love” came out and reached top charts. The City Of Beverly is currently looking for artist to design a potential statue in the center of the plaza. If any are interest, go to the Beverly cite where you will find criteria and the reward of the design that is chosen.
